A new roadmap has been published to set out how to scale up long-duration energy storage (LDES) which is seen as key to the UK’s energy transition.

The Transition Finance Council said a system-led approach to LDES can reduce system costs, curtailment, grid congestion, and emissions as well as enable more effective deployment of renewables.

The report said the current landscape for projects in the UK is “evolving coherently” with revenue stacking mechanisms through a combination of wholesale markets, ancillary and balancing revenues, regulatory support through the cap and floor agreement, and capacity markets.

It sets out a number of recommendations to help LDES get the support it needs to develop in the years ahead.

Chris Skidmore Chair of the Transition Finance Council’s Pathways, Policies, and Governance working group, said: “To enable LDES to succeed, the role of transition finance has never been more important. It must provide the private capital to finance both planned projects and technologies for the future.”
